The Holjes-Sheppard Memorial Park
My wife Rhonda and I visited Washington D.C a few weeks ago with my sister-in law Cindy and her daughter Maggie. It was a trip that I had promised my niece Maggie last year and had yet to make good on the promise - of which she continually reminded me “when are you going to take me to Washington D.C. Uncle mark?” - you have to love kids and their honesty!
We had a great time as we walked from museum to museum and saw all the monuments on the National Mall.
One thing that I have made a tradition to do is to visit the Vietnam Wall. I always stand there in awe at the meaning of the wall and the many names that are listed.
A few years ago, I brought my trumpet and played taps at the center of the Vietnam Wall. This was an experience that I will always remember and wanted to continue whenever possible.
For those that don’t know, I spent 6 years as a Marine Bandsman stationed at MCRD San Diego. I have lost count at the amount of times I have performed taps for our fallen heroes - but it has NEVER LOST it’s meaning.
So during this visit, I performed taps at the Vietnam Wall while my niece Maggie looked on.
At the Vietnam Wall, they have volunteers called docents that answer question from visiters. They will also help you locate a Veteran hero listed on the wall. While there I asked for the location of 2 of our local Veteran hero’s, 2nd LT Frederick Y Holjes and WO Robert Porter Sheppard - for which our park is named after.
2nd LT Holjes’ name is located on panel 45E - line 57.
WO Sheppard’s name is located on panel 11W - line 128.
May we always remember these fine young men and all the hero’s who have given their lives for our country.
